Bots

Play chess against bots that play like people

Most computer opponents either crush you or play nonsense. These look only as far ahead as a real player at their rating, make the same kind of mistakes, and think at a human pace.

Personalities

  • Echo (adaptive): Adapts to you. Every game is a close fight.
  • Blaze (1300): All-out attacker. Sacrifices first, asks questions later.
  • Grandma Rosa (1100): Patient grinder. Trades down and wins the endgame.
  • Gambit Gus (900): A showman. Throws pawns at you from move one.

The rating ladder

  • Rookie Theo (400): Just learned castling. Expect some surprises.
  • Casual Maya (800): Plays for fun and occasionally finds a tactic.
  • Club Regular Sam (1000): Solid fundamentals, comfortable in the opening.
  • Tactical Priya (1200): Watches for tactics and punishes loose moves.
  • Sharp Idris (1600): Strong club player. Rarely blunders.

Why they feel human

  • Depth by rating: from 1 ply at 400 to 6 ply at 1600.
  • Real mistakes by rating: 5% of moves at 400, 0.8% at 1600.
  • A human opening book: beginners really do play the early queen sortie, and sometimes fall for Scholar's Mate.
  • Human pace: quick on obvious moves, longer when several moves are close.
