How the Pawn Moves

Pawns move straight forward one square (two on their first move) and capture diagonally.

touch_appLearn it by doing: read the short explanation, then play it on the board.

The rule

A pawn moves straight forward one square. On its very first move it may go two squares. Pawns never move backwards.

Unlike other pieces, a pawn captures differently from how it moves: one square diagonally forward. Here the pawn on e5 can capture on d6, but it's blocked going straight.
