2 puzzles, solved
Back Rank Mate (beginner, White to move)add
The king is shut in by its own pawns. Checkmate on the back rank. Solution: 1.Ra8#. Ra8#. The king's own pawns block f7, g7 and h7, and the rook covers the whole 8th rank. In your own games, make 'luft' (h3 or g3) so your king doesn't get trapped like this.
Doubled Rooks Break Through (beginner, White to move)add
Two rooks on one file beat a single defender. Overload the back rank. Solution: 1.Rd8+ Rxd8 2.Rxd8#. Rd8+! Rxd8 Rxd8#. The rooks were doubled (a 'battery'), so when the first one is taken, the second one lands on d8 with mate. Doubling rooks on an open file is one of the strongest ways rooks can work together.
How to spot it in your games
- The king is trapped behind its own pawns.
- The pawns on f7, g7 and h7 take away every escape square.
- Black's rook can take one of your rooks on d8, but not both.
When players miss it: "Missing checkmates"
When the coach analyses your games, missed back-rank mate are counted under "Missing checkmates". When the enemy king is short of squares, look at every check first. Checks are the most forcing moves.
