Turn a chess game into a GIF

Paste the PGN of any game (from Lichess, Chess.com or your own notes) and get an animated GIF of it, move by move. It's made in your browser, ready to download or share.

How it works

  1. 1Your PGN or move list is read with the chess.js rules library; illegal moves stop the reading so you know where the problem is.
  2. 2Each position is drawn on a canvas with the same pieces and board colours as Wings Chess, with the last move highlighted and the move written underneath.
  3. 3The frames are encoded into a GIF right in your browser (nothing is uploaded), with a longer pause on the final position.
  4. 4Choose which side is at the bottom and the speed, then download it or share it straight from your phone.

Getting the PGN of your game

  • Lichess: open the game, then Share & export → PGN, and copy the text.
  • Chess.com: open the game, then Share → PGN, and copy.
  • On paper: type the moves as 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 … and it works the same.

FAQ

Is the GIF made on your server?add

No. Everything happens in your browser: your game never leaves your device.

How long a game can I convert?add

Up to 160 half-moves (80 moves each). Longer games are cut at that point to keep the file small enough to share.

Can I use it on Twitter, WhatsApp or Discord?add

Yes. A typical 40-move game is a few hundred kilobytes, which every major app accepts as an animated image.

Why is there a wingschess.com mark?add

It's a small credit in the corner under the board so people can find the tool. It never covers the board.
